This lecture will demystify PR and help filmmakers market and promote their films early on in the creative process. Alia will provide concrete DIY tactics and advice on selecting and working with a publicist, and discuss festival marketing and publicity strategies. 

Workshop: Thesis Project Case Studies

Select thesis works will be used as examples of how to identify and engage audiences, illustrate how filmmakers can develop publicity angles and brainstorm creative community partnership opportunities.

Los Angeles based ALIA QUART KHAN is a passionate and seasoned film publicity professional with extensive corporate, festival and awards publicity experience. Over the past 10+ years, Alia has developed multi-faceted marketing and publicity campaigns and has taken films to some of the world’s most prestigious international film festivals (Toronto, Venice, Cannes).

Alia is currently Film Independent’s Director of Publicity. Film Independent is the non-profit arts organization that produces the Los Angeles Film Festival, the Spirit Awards, the Film Independent Forum and the Film Independent at LACMA screening series. In this role, Alia leads the organization’s publicity and communication efforts, promoting the organization and its programs.

Prior to joining Film Independent, Alia focused on awards campaigns for studios including The Weinstein Company, Dreamworks Animation, Lionsgate and Sony Pictures.  Some of her most memorable campaigns include The Master, Django Unchained, Silver Linings Playbook, The Iron Lady, The Artist, The Ides of March and Warrior.

Previously, Alia worked in Canada on corporate and film PR for the National Film Board of Canada and managed the national literary competition for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Alia graduated from McGill University with a BA in Cultural Studies and Political Science, earned her MA from the University of Warwick in Film and Television Studies, and a certificate in Film and Television Development from UCLA Extension.
